Your customers look for you on Google. And find your competitors.

The traffic already exists. The question is who wins it.

Right now, someone is typing your trade followed by your town into Google. A plumber for a leak, a hairdresser for Saturday morning, a garage for a slipping clutch. That person has a real need and a budget ready. The only question is whose name they will click.

If it is not yours, it will be a competitor's. They may not be better than you. Just more visible when it matters.

How your customers actually choose

The process is almost always the same. Someone searches on their phone, looks at the first results beside the map, opens one or two business profiles, checks the reviews and photos, then calls. It all happens in a few minutes, sometimes less.

They almost never scroll to the bottom of the page. They do not compare ten businesses. They choose from what Google puts in front of them, then move on.

A restaurant with a beautiful dining room but an empty profile does not exist in that journey. Neither does a beauty salon without recent photos. Your expertise is invisible from a phone screen. What people can see is what you have put online.

What Google checks before showing your business

Google does not know who does good work. It ranks what it can measure: a complete, up-to-date Business Profile, recent reviews with replies, real photos of your work, and a website that loads quickly on mobile and clearly says what you do and where you do it.

Every completed item helps you move up. Every empty field benefits the competitor next door who spent an hour taking care of theirs.

Another point many tradespeople overlook: most of these searches happen on a phone, often on the move and sometimes in an emergency. A website designed for a computer screen but awkward to read on mobile starts at a disadvantage, however good the work behind it.

What you can do this week

  • Claim your Google Business Profile if you have not already: it is free and takes a few minutes.
  • Check that your phone number, opening hours and address are correct everywhere. One inconsistency can make Google and your customers doubt you.
  • Add around ten recent photos of your work: a finished garden for a landscaper, a salon interior for a hairdresser, a signature dish for a restaurant.
  • Ask your last three happy customers for a review. A simple message with the link is enough.
  • Search for your trade and town on your own phone and look at the results: that is exactly what your customers see.

Word of mouth is no longer enough

Word of mouth is still valuable, but it has changed. Today, even a customer referred by a friend looks you up on Google before calling. They want to check you exist, see your work and read what others say about you. If they find nothing, the recommendation loses weight. If they find a better-presented competitor, the business may even go elsewhere.

That is the most frustrating part: a tradesperson who is invisible on Google does not lose customers in a visible way. Nobody calls to say they chose someone else. Jobs, appointments and table bookings quietly go elsewhere, week after week.

Your website finishes what your profile started

Your Google profile catches the eye, but the website often decides whether someone calls. A garage with a clear website, its services, hours and a clickable phone number right at the top turns a visit into a call. A slow, dated or confusing website does the opposite: it sends the customer to the next result.

You do not need a complicated website. You need a fast one that is easy to read on a phone and answers the three questions everyone asks within seconds: what do you do, where, and how can I reach you? Everything else comes second.
