Geneva concentrates most demand in French-speaking Switzerland, and its economy resembles no French city of comparable size. Private banking, watchmaking, commodity trading, law firms, international organisations and an expatriate population that often searches in English.

A website designed for a French market immediately feels out of place there, and the reverse is true too.

What Geneva customers look for

Restraint before spectacle. In this market, a website that is too animated, too sales-driven or too pushy raises doubts. Professionalism is demonstrated through precision: complete legal information, named contacts, verifiable references and figures that can be cross-checked.

The second local habit is verification. A Geneva customer checks who is behind the business, where its registered office is and how long it has existed. A page showing the real team and a verifiable address carry more weight than a sales pitch.

Prices charged in Geneva

Geneva’s prices are the highest in the French-speaking world, driven by local labour costs. A provider based in the city rarely charges less than CHF 3,000 for a business website, and company projects commonly fall between CHF 8,000 and CHF 25,000.

That is precisely what opens the door to foreign providers working remotely, generally charging 30 to 50 per cent less for comparable quality. In such a demanding market, however, the price argument only works after the work has convinced the client, never before.

Less competition than the volume suggests

This is the anomaly of the Geneva market, and it is measurable. Searches combining website creation and Geneva show volumes comparable to French cities with twice the population, with considerably lower ranking difficulty.

At the same time, advertising bids are among the highest recorded across the sector, some exceeding ten francs per click. More value per visitor and fewer competitors to capture it: that is the definition of an underserved market.

The domain and hosting

.ch is open to everyone without a residency requirement, for around ten francs per year. Google clearly favours it for searches made in Switzerland, and a Geneva customer instinctively trusts it more than a foreign domain. Our guide to creating a website in Switzerland also covers the project budget and scope.

Hosting in Switzerland adds no technical advantage, but becomes a real selling point when the business handles sensitive data: healthcare, finance and legal practices. In those sectors, ‘data hosted in Switzerland’ carries weight.

The neighbouring canton of Vaud

Lausanne, Montreux, Nyon and Morges form French-speaking Switzerland’s second major market, with a more diverse economy and slightly more measured budgets than Geneva. Their proximity means a provider working in one naturally covers the other.

A business based around Lake Geneva also benefits from explicitly naming both areas on its website: searches almost always combine the service and town, and nobody searches for ‘Lake Geneva region’.

Frequently asked questions

01How much does a website cost in Geneva?

Rarely less than CHF 3,000 for a business website from a local provider, and commonly between CHF 8,000 and CHF 25,000 for a company project. A foreign provider working remotely generally charges 30 to 50 per cent less.

02Does a Geneva website need an English version?

Very often, yes. With international organisations, finance and the expatriate population, a large share of local searches happens in English. Depending on the sector, this can represent half the audience.

03Is Geneva a highly competitive SEO market?

Less than you might imagine. Search volumes are comparable to French cities with twice the population, with considerably lower ranking difficulty, while advertising bids are among the sector’s highest.

04Do you need to be based in Geneva to work there?

No. Remote work is common and well accepted. What matters is understanding the local specifics: .ch, the question of English and the Federal Act on Data Protection, which is not the GDPR.
