Web agencies in Lausanne: French-speaking Switzerland’s second market, cheaper and less competitive

Vaud, the Lake Geneva region and an economy more diverse than Geneva’s.

Lausanne is French-speaking Switzerland’s second main market, and it behaves differently from Geneva. Its economy is more diverse, less concentrated on finance and international business, with many small businesses, shops, healthcare and education providers, and technology companies around the federal institute of technology.

The practical result: more measured budgets, less automatic demand for English and shorter decision cycles. The guide to website development budgets in Switzerland helps compare scopes.

What differs from Geneva

  • French is enough in the vast majority of cases. English becomes useful for organisations connected with EPFL and technology companies, rather than elsewhere.
  • Budgets typically sit 20 to 30 per cent below Geneva levels for comparable services.
  • Customers are more local, so Google Business Profiles carry much more weight than in Geneva.
  • The canton extends well beyond Lausanne: Montreux, Vevey, Nyon, Morges and Yverdon matter, and searches almost always combine the service and town.

What makes the difference locally

In a local market, the Google Business Profile often brings more than the website itself. It appears above all organic results, and on a phone it occupies the entire first screen.

The second factor is explicitly naming the towns. Nobody searches for ‘Lake Geneva region’ or ‘canton of Vaud’: they search for ‘Lausanne’, ‘Montreux’ or ‘Nyon’. A business covering several towns benefits from naming them, provided it actually works there.

The domain

As everywhere in Switzerland, .ch is open to everyone for around ten francs per year, and Google clearly favours it for searches made within the country. In a market as local as Vaud’s, that is a direct advantage.

Frequently asked questions

01How much does a website cost in Lausanne?

Between CHF 1,800 and CHF 5,000 using a template, and CHF 5,000 to CHF 15,000 for a bespoke build. Prices in Vaud generally sit 20 to 30 per cent below Geneva levels.

02Does a Lausanne website need an English version?

Much less often than in Geneva. It makes sense around the federal institute of technology and technology companies, but rarely for a local shop or small business.

03Should I list every town in the canton?

Name the places where you actually work, with your travel radius. A list of thirty towns without other content is treated as keyword stuffing and can work against the website.
