Understanding the term

Duplicates arise on their own: with and without www, with and without a trailing slash, with tracking parameters, or in a printable version. Without a canonical, the search engine chooses for itself, sometimes poorly, and authority is dispersed.

A page without a canonical is not penalised, but it leaves the search engine to make a decision the page could specify itself.
