Domain name

Understanding the term

The domain and the website are separate things. The domain is the address; the hosting is the premises. You can move premises while keeping your address, but the reverse is not true: losing the domain means disappearing from your customers’ memory and breaking every link that pointed to you.

The critical point is not the price but the registered holder. The domain must be registered in your name, with your email address as the owner’s contact. Many providers register it in their own name, turning a departure into a negotiation.
