Understanding the term

The benefit is clear on a long page: only what is viewed gets downloaded. An article with ten images loads just two when it first opens.

The trap is applying it to the image at the top of the page. This is almost always the largest visible element, and therefore the one measured by LCP. Delaying it makes that metric worse instead of better.
