Understanding the term

It can be a simple spreadsheet: affected page, previous version, work carried out, publication date and person responsible. Changes to content, links, URLs, measurement or hosting can then be traced.

This log helps connect observed changes with the work carried out. It also helps prepare a return to an earlier version when necessary.

An improvement after a change does not, by itself, prove that the change caused it. The log reveals other changes made at the same time and helps build more useful comparisons.
