Understanding the term
It stopped being optional long ago. Most local searches happen on phones, often on the move and sometimes urgently. A website designed for a computer screen but frustrating on mobile starts with a disadvantage that the quality of the business behind it cannot offset.
Google indexes a website’s mobile version first. What its crawler sees is therefore the phone layout, not the attractive wide-screen version you view on your monitor.
